Pro Baseball: Nathan B. Newman, West Michigan Whitecaps

Nathan B. Newman pitched two innings, striking out two and allowing no earned runs Sunday in the West Michigan Whitecaps's 3-0 loss at the South Bend Silver Hawks. Newman graduated from Houston Christian High School.

A 2005 graduate of Houston Christian Newman made three different stops in his college baseball career before entering the professional ranks. He spent his freshman season (2006) at Tulane going 0-0 with a 5.69 ERA in 11 relief appearances for the Green Wave. Newman transfered to Grayson County College for his sophomore season (2007) before returning to Division I with Pepperdine in 2008. He spent two seasons (2008 and 2009) with the Waves going a combined 11-9 in 28 outings 25 of which were starts. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 17th round (510th overall) of the 2009 MLB draft. He started his pro career in the Tigers' system making 12 appearances in 2009 for Oneonta of the short-season class-A New York-Penn League going 2-1 with a 2.34 ERA. Newman spent all of 2010 with West Michigan of the Midwest League (single-A) going 0-5 with a 4.46 ERA in 28 appearances. He was born Dec. 17 1986 in Houston.
