Competitors rush to solve Rubik's Cubes at Stratford High
published Jun. 22, 2011
The fourth annual Houston Spring Rubik's Cube competition drew about 25 competitors to the auditorium of Stratford High School on May 21.
The competitors strove to be the quickest at solving different versions of the cube puzzle, which was popularized in the 1980s. Organizer Aditya Dargan, of the Houston Cubing Association, says competitors came from around Texas, as well as from Louisiana, New Mexico and California.
"There is an excitement that comes with solving it for the first time," Dargan says. "Solving it fast is that on a whole other level."
Dargan says the fastest "solve" at the competition happened in just under 10 seconds. A judge was on hand to record the competitors' solve times into an international database.
The event raised about $200 for charity, which Dargan says will likely be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
