Houston Youth Symphony presents spring concert
published Apr. 26, 2012
A chance to hear the finest young musicians who call Houston home is coming up when the award-winning Houston Youth Symphony (HYS) performs its final concert of the season.
Four ensembles comprised of nearly 300 Houston musicians aged 7-18 will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, in Rice University's Stude Concert Hall.
The HYS Symphony is made up of the most advanced of the student musicians. Artistic Director and Conductor Michael Webster will lead the symphony through a performance of hero and heroine-themed works, including Beethoven's "Leonore" Overture No. 3 from his opera, "Fidelio," and Dvo?ák's "Heldenlied" (A Hero's Song), a heroic tone poem.
The next ensemble, the Philharmonia, directed by Michael Alan Isadore, will present John Williams' "Olympic Fanfare and Theme" and the beloved finale from Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 43.
The intermediate-level full orchestra, Sinfonia, is conducted by Zachary Carrettin and will perform Brahms' "Academic Festival Overture" and Karl Ahrendt's "Montage."
The beginners' group, the String Orchestra, is co-conducted by Carolyn Vandiver and Ann Victor and will perform music from "The Sound of Music" and "The Titanic."
Tickets are $15 and are available at the door or by calling 713-785-2422.
