Cancer survivors partake in a sweet celebration

published Jul. 10, 2012

Memorial Hermann hosted the Annual Cancer Survivors’ Celebration of Life and Cupcake Contest on June 1 in the ballroom of the Westin Houston, located at 945 Gessner Road in Houston.

The event featured classes for survivors and caregivers, a resource fair with 25 exhibits and a celebration inspired by the American Cancer Society’s national theme of “More Birthdays.”

More than 275 people were in attendance.

A cupcake throw-down was also held, wherein five local bakers from Memorial Bakery, Memorial Hermann Catering, Ooh La La–Katy, Three Brothers Bakery and the Westin Houston competed to see who could bake the best treat.

The contest was judged by State Rep. Dwayne Bohac; Executive Chef Michael Cordua of Cordua Restaurants; Betti Guzman, vice president of the High Plains Region, American Cancer Society; Steve Sanders, CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands; Donna Vallone, breast cancer survivor; and Rameen Zahed, colorectal cancer survivor.

The victor of the contest was Three Brothers Bakery, earning a prize package worth $1,500.
