Westside grad Sydney Colson collects double-double in Aggies' blowout of TCU
Sydney Colson, 2007 Westside High School graduate, finished with a double-double, matched her career high with 11 assists and added five steals (one away from her career best) as the seventh-ranked Texas A&M Aggies rolled to a 91-66 victory over TCU on Sunday.
It was her first double-double of the season and third of her career. Her last double-double was on Nov. 15, 2009, when she registered 17 points and 10 assists against Duke.
TCU coach Jeff Mittie, Colson and Aggies Head Coach Gary Blair all spoke to the Houston Chronicle.
"Colson was such a key to this game; she really delivered the ball when it needed to be delivered," Mittie said.
"This year there’s not just one person we can go to," Colson said of A&M’s multitude of scorers. "We have so many weapons on offense."
"She’s going to jam it down your throat when you’re getting back on defense and feeling good about yourself, even after you’ve scored," Blair said.
Colson was rated the 29th overall prospect and No. 8 point guard in the class of 2007 by the All-Star Girls Basketball Report. She led the White team with 19 points in the TABC All-Star Girls Basketball Game as a senior.
Colson was a McDonald's High School All-American nominee and was named the 2005 Houston Chronicle's Girls Preseason Player of the Year after coming off a 29-4 sophomore campaign. She earned All-Greater Houston honors averaging 16.2 points and 4.2 assists per game as a junior, and was selected as a 5A All-District First Team and All-Greater Houston Second Team selection in 2005.
She played AAU summer basketball for the Houston Insiders coached by James Daniels and the West Coast Elite, a California-based club team, formerly coached by Kevin Morrison. Colson led the Insiders to the 2005 Basketball on the Bayou tournament title in New Orleans, which featured more than 100 teams from across the country. She also garnered tournament MVP honors.
Colson, born August 6, 1989, in Houston, is the daughter of Simmie and Stephanie Colson. She chose A&M over Oklahoma and LSU, and is a sociology major at Texas A&M.
