Memorial senior reaches finals at national tourney
Memorial senior tennis player Michael Riechmann paired with Lutheran South senior Stuart Kenyon to reach the doubles final at the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18s Winter National Championships last Saturday in Phoenix.
Riechmann is ranked 64th nationally, while Kenyon is 106th.
The duo was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Californians Eric Johnson and Mackenzie McDonald.
Johnson was also the boys 18s singles champion at the national tournament.
Many of the nation’s top junior tennis players competed in eight USTA National Championships across the state of Arizona during the tournament last week.
Riechmann and Kenyon receive year-round instruction from Steve Bryan at King Daddy Sports which operates out of the Westheimer Indoor Tennis Club.
Bryan is a former NCAA champion at the University of Texas and played professionally.
Kenyon won the TAPPS 4A State singles championship in 2008 and 2009 and Riechmann was a quarterfinalist at last year's 5A state singles championship.
