HS girls basketball: Memorial defeats Seven Lakes

Memorial picked up a victory against Seven Lakes in District 19-5A high school girls basketball action on Tuesday, winning 43-29.

With Kirby McDaniel out with an injury, Madison Miller nursing a sore Achilles and Ellen Anderson having an uncharacteristically cold night from the field, it was a team effort that featured a swarming team defense and only six turnovers for the evening.

"The girls played well defensively tonight," Memorial coach Jyusef Larry said. "Anytime you play that type of defense, you have a chance to win even if we don't shoot as well as we normally do. Our shooting will come around -- I'm not worried about that."

Memorial evened up its record at 12-12 and is now 5-1 in district play.

Junior forward Kelly Wilson ended the night with a season-high 20 points and 3 steals, followed by Olivia Podaras with 12 points.

"Our defense has to continue to improve if we are going to accomplish our goals," Larry said. "The girls understand that and they are working towards that each and every day."

Memorial will next visit Morton Ranch on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The loss brings Seven Lakes to 17-8 on the season and 2-3 in district play.

Senior Ashley Shaw scored nine points for the losing team.

Seven Lakes will next host Katy on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
