KIPP Sharpstown student wins $10K scholarship
KIPP Sharpstown student Victor Viveros recently received a $10,000 Doris Fisher Award at an awards ceremony in Nashville, Tenn.
Viveros is one of only six students to win the 2011 Doris Fisher Award. The $10,000 college scholarship is named after Doris Fisher, co-founder of Gap Inc., to recognize her longtime support of public education. The award honors students' accomplishments in overcoming challenges to excel in three areas -- academics, leadership and character.
"I am delighted to recognize Victor and the other students who have worked so hard to win this special award," Doris Fisher said in a recent press release. "I look forward to seeing how these motivated and talented youth go on to fulfill their academic and personal potential in college and beyond."
Viveros has served as student body president, vice principal of the second violins in the KIPP Sharpstown orchestra and team manager of the boys basketball team. In addition to his involvement with a church youth group and the Houston Scholar program, he offers his time to help fellow students and adults learn difficult pieces of music.
KIPP Sharpstown College Preparatory was established in 2007 to serve students from the Sharpstown and Gulfton neighborhoods. KIPP Sharpstown currently serves students in grades five through eight. There are 109 KIPP schools in 20 states and Washington, D.C., serving over 32,000 students.
