Adam Holtman, eighth-grader from St. Cecilia Catholic School, was recently named state ambassador for the Harris/Houston County, Texas Do the Write Thing Challenge competition.
For the competition, students were asked to write and submit a composition analyzing the causes of youth violence and the impact on their lives. This competition is a part of the National Campaign to Stop Violence.
The announcement of all state ambassadors was made on April 28 at Minute Maid Park.
Holtman is the first student from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to be selected at the state level. His composition was chosen from a total of 11,614 student essays.
Holtman will join ambassadors from eight other Texas cities in Austin in June to participate in the Do the Write Thing Texas Challenge State Summit. Ambassadors will form focus groups and discuss plans to be proposed to policy makers.
Jolie Thompson, Holtman's English teacher, will accompany him to Austin. She encouraged her students to take part in the challenge after holding a class discussion on violence.
