Richmonds Air discusses the rising cost of Freon
In Houston, air conditioning isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity, especially during the summer season. But keeping air conditioned and cool is getting a lot more expensive. It isn’t officially summer yet, but the temperature of cooling homes and offices in Houston is soaring. According to James Richmond, of Richmond’s Air in Southern, a spike in the price of Freon nearly three times higher than last years’ prices is to blame for the higher air conditioning prices.
“Some are saying ‘Golly, that’s a lot more than it was last year,’” Richmond said. “I have to explain exactly what’s happening with it.”
The bump in the cost of Freon is the result of an EPA mandate phasing out of all Freon Refrigerant 22 in favor of a new version that is better for the environment. A refill of Freon now costs nearly $1,000 for a single unit, so imagine the cost to restaurants and other establishments that have more than thousands of tons of air conditioning equipment.
But even with the cost of Freon rising, Richmond’s Air is still attempting to keep prices as low as it can. Currently, Richmond’s Air is offering a 10 percent discount to all of its customers on all air conditioning repairs.
