It’s a great time for wildlife watching, and where better to enjoy viewing them than in one’s own backyard? “Squirrels can be a lot of fun to watch, and many people just love to see their antics,” said Kathy Coward, owner of Just For The Birds. “(But) some people do not like the squirrels eating all the food for the birds or destroying their feeders to get the food.”

In either case, Just For The Birds offers useful items for customers — squirrel feeders and squirrel-proof feeders.

Squirrels will eat seed, corn and nuts, and watching them can be very entertaining — especially juvenile squirrels, who will jump and wrestle with each other, play tag in high grass and splash around in a fountain, just like a kid. The shop has feeders made just for squirrels, like a swing, table and chair feeders, change to bungee cords for ears of corn on the end, jar feeders, and flat-screen feeders for excellent viewing. On the other hand, there are items that prevent squirrels from reaching the bird food.

“Some of the best squirrel-proof feeders are made by Droll Yankees and Brome,” Coward said. “Some work with the weight of the squirrel, where the perches or perch will collapse with their weight but will let the birds eat because they weigh very little and will not trigger the mechanism. Droll Yankees has a wonderful squirrel-proof feeder called the Flipper. ... When the squirrel gets on the perch, the perch spins with its weight and spins the squirrel off — great entertainment, in addition to working.”
