Randalls now has meningococcal vaccine for new college students
Houston-area Randalls pharmacies are offering the meningococcal vaccine for new college students on a walk-in basis.
Randalls locations providing the vaccine include 11041 Westheimer Road, 9660 Westheimer Road and 12850 Memorial Drive.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, all entering college and university students and transfer students are required to show of an initial vaccination or booster dose during the five-year period prior to enrollment. Students must be vaccinated at least 10 days before the beginning of the semester.
Vaccination is also required of students who attended an institution prior to 2012 and are enrolling in an institution of higher education following a break of at least one semester.
"We have made the process of getting your college kids up to date on their vaccinations convenient," said Randalls President Paul McTavish in a press release. "Students can get vaccinated while you shop for groceries."
The meningococcal bacteria is relatively rare but can lead to meningitis, which affects the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Those who live in close quarters, such as college students, are at a higher risk of catching the disease.
