Hummingbirds take center stage this month at Just For The Birds

"We really have two seasons in Houston for our hummingbirds; the first season is the end of March to the beginning of April, when they come from the south going north,” said Kathy Coward, owner of Just For The Birds. “They migrate through, with a few staying around through to July. This year, that season has been terrible. We have had very few hummingbirds. We never know why for sure — maybe the drought last year causing less flowers for nectar, maybe their migration pattern veered off our path this time, or who knows.

“Our next season is mid-August through mid-October, when the hummingbirds come from the north going south. This is always our best season, and I can't wait to greet those wonderful birds. Until they come, you might try a great DVD about hummingbirds called ‘First Flight.’ It is a 45 minute DVD showing a mother hummingbird building her nest and having her babies on a backyard clothesline in Las Vegas. The next thing would be to get your hummingbird feeders ready for them when they get here."
