IKEA Houston announces end-of-summer events

Crayfish, kitchens and KOOZA will be featured in summer wrap-up events planned by IKEA Houston.

The lineup of August events kicks off with a Cirque du Soleil-themed Humpday Happy Hour from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 1 in the second-floor restaurant at IKEA Houston, Interstate 10 and Antoine. Proceeds from the event will benefit Theatre Under the Stars’s education programs. The artful event will be filled with food, music and beverages from Constellation Wines. A donation of $5 is suggested but the event is free.

Other events include the IKEA crayfish party and the return of the mobile pet adoptions with Friends for Life.

The crayfish party, also known as Kräftskiva, will be held from 6:30-8:30 Aug. 17 in the IKEA restaurant. It pays tribute to the company’s Swedish roots. Unlike the Cajun-style mudbugs, Swedish crayfish are marinated in dill and lemon and served cold. Also served during the celebration will be an assortment of marinated salmon, shell-on prawns, shrimp, salad, hard-boiled eggs, a variety of Swedish cheeses, crisp bread, desserts and cookies, tea, coffee and fountain drinks. The cost is $9.99 for adults and $2.49 for children under 12.

A back-to-school party with Radio Disney will be held from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 18 at the IKEA store. Shake It Up will feature free dance demonstrations, crafts and pictures with the Shake It Up backdrop. Prizes and other awards will be given out by Disney.

Aurora Picture Show's Popcorn Kids Workshop, is inspired by IKEA furniture, will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 25 in the store’s restaurant. The workshop, called Living Rooms Come Alive!, is free and recommended for children age 9-12. To reserve a spot in the workshop, visit www.celebratelifeathome.com.

MFAH Mixed Media will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Aug. 24 at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Caroline Wiess Law Building and Cullinan Hall. Swedish-inspired cocktails and dancing will highlight the monthly events, which are for people 18 and older. To purchase tickets, visit www.mfah.org/mixedmedia. The cost is $10 for cardholders in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets for those who are not cardholders will cost $12 in advance and $14 at the door.

IKEA Houston also has several ongoing events, including Sagostund, or Story Time, Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m. in the store’s restaurant each Tuesday in August; Friends for Life mobile pet adoption will be at the IKEA Houston Plaza from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4; the kitchen sale will be held through Aug. 19; and Last Call – Summer at the Houston Zoo will be held through Aug. 31 at the Houston Zoo, 6200 Hermann Park Drive.
