Mark Vorderbruggen, a research chemist and intrepid explorer, will lead a class teaching Texas residents about the various edible plants growing in the surrounding landscape from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, 4501 Woodway Drive, Houston.

The class, hosted by the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, will focus on where to find, how to identify and proper preparation of the fruits, shoots, roots and salad greens growing in the local wilderness. Individuals who would like to learn to survive in the woods as well as those who would like to cut down their own grocery bill are invited to sign up.

Topics will include hands-on plant identification, responsible harvesting techniques, preparation, dangerous mimics and poisonous plants and edible landscaping.

The cost is $40 for center members, and $50 for nonmembers.

Attendees should bring comfortable walking shoes, water, snack and insect repellent. A pen and camera are also recommended.
