Edible Wild Plants workshop scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center will offer "Edible Wild Plants," an outdoor workshop, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 11.

Participants will learn how to locate, identify and prepare wild vegetative food sources with instructor Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen. Topics to be explored include: hands-on plant identification, responsible harvesting techniques, preparation of foods, dangerous mimics and poisonous plants and edible landscaping.

Vorderbruggen is a research chemist and avid adventurer. He is also the author of the blog, "Merriwether the Adventurer."

Participants are instructed to bring walking shoes, water, a snack, bug repellent, a pen or pencil and camera. Vorderbruggen will supply participants with a plant guide sheet.

The cost to attend is $40 for Houston Arboretum members and $50 for nonmembers. The course will be canceled if less than 12 participants register by two weeks prior to the course.

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is located at 4501 Woodway Drive, Houston.
