Memorial Girl Scout plants vegetable garden to earn Gold Award

Karen Scarbrough, a Girl Scout and 2012 graduate of St. Agnes Academy, has earned a Gold Award.

Karen Scarbrough, a Girl Scout and 2012 graduate of St. Agnes Academy, planted a vegetable garden at her school to earn the Gold Award.

The award is the highest a Girl Scout can receive and less than 5 percent of girls who join achieve the recognition.

"I learned just because something sounds simple does not guarantee that it is. Building a garden is deceptively difficult," said Scarbrough, according to a press release.  "I chose this project because my school's Green Club wanted a garden. I could help out my community and earn my Gold Award at the same time," she continued.

Scarbrough led a volunteer team in designing, planning, building and planting the garden, utilizing wood scraps to build the garden frame. Construction took place over a period of five days.

A member of Girl Scouts for 12 years, Scarbrough will attend college in the fall to study graphic arts and geology.
