High school football: Spring Dekaney-Strake Jesuit, preview
Spring Dekaney High School kicks off its 2012 football season at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Strake Jesuit. The Wildcats had an impressive 2011 season, going 14-2 overall and winning the 5A Division II State championship by defeating previously unbeaten Cibolo Steele. They tied for second in league play with a 5-2 mark, and outscored opponents by 17.4 points per game. Head coach Willie Amendola has eight starters returning for 2012, and will rely on senior quarterback D'Juan Hines, senior linebacker Cody Perdue and senior offensive lineman Jared Marshall. After the Strake Jesuit match-up, Dekaney is back home again for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 14 against Spring, before going on the road for a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Klein Oak. The Strake Jesuit Crusaders are coming off a disappointing 3-7 season overall, just 2-5 in league play. They were outscored last year by an average margin of 11.7 points per game. Head coach James Clancy has 10 starters returning, and is looking for production from linebacker Emanuelle Ellerbee and defensive end Ben Huskinson. Following the Dekaney opener, the Crusaders are back home for three consecutive 7 p.m. games, starting with a Friday, Sept. 7 meeting with St. Thomas Catholic. On Friday, Sept. 14 they will face Dallas Jesuit, followed on Friday, Sept. 28 against Katy Taylor. They then hit the road for a 6 p.m. contest on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Memorial.
