High school volleyball: League City Clear Springs at Houston Memorial, preview

The Houston Memorial High School Mustangs girls volleyball team will take on the Clear Springs High School Chargers in a non-district match at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in Houston.

The Lady Mustangs are coming off a 58th place showing (of 79 schools) and a 3-5 record in the Nike Pearland Classic held Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.

Memorial struggled in the first two rounds of the tournament, defeating only Cleveland Tarkington and Fort Bend Elkins High Schools over the first two days while dropping four other matches.

The Lady Mustangs won their opening contest Saturday over San Antonio Brandeis High School in three sets but were blanked in two sets by Richmond Foster High School in its final match.

Clear Springs also competed in the Classic and posted a 4-3 record, yet ended up in 65th place. The Lady Chargers lost all three of their first-day matches before winning all three Friday against La Porte, Magnolia West and Houston Stratford High Schools, then defeating Clute Brazoswood High School in two sets on the final day of the tournament.

Following the Clear Springs match, Memorial will host Katy Cinco Ranch in its District 19 opener Friday, Sept. 7, before traveling to meet Houston St. Agnes High School for a non-district match Tuesday, Sept. 11, and welcoming Katy Morton Ranch for a district match Friday, Sept. 14. All contests will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Chargers will open District 24 play when they host Clear Brook High School at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, and remain in district for the second of three season matches at Brazoswood at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11. A road re-match at La Porte at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, will be Clear Springs' final non-district match of the regular season.
