Houston St. John's High School football team season opener scheduled Sept. 7

The Houston St. John's High School football team will play at home for the first time this season when it hosts Houston Second Baptist at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7.

St. John's is coming off of a 25-17 win over Tomball Concordia Lutheran in its season opener Friday, Aug. 31.

The Mavericks rode the effort of Logan Smith to the win. Smith rushed for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 85 yards for another score. Ben Griffin also had a rushing touchdown.

St. John's finished with 324 yards, including 124 yards accumulated by Griffin.

Second Baptist was beaten 49-14 by East Bernard in its first game of the year on Friday, Aug. 31. The Fighting Eagles tallied 156 total yards. Travis Moreland scored on a one-yard run and Austin Davison returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown.

The Mavericks will play Austin St. Andrew's Episcopal on Friday, Sept. 14 and will play at Houston Christian on Friday, Sept. 21. St. John's plays host to Fort Worth Country Day on Friday, Sept. 28. All three games will begin at 7 p.m.

Second Baptist will play host to Tomball Concordia Christian on Friday, Sept. 14 and will play Houston Lutheran North on Thursday, Sept. 27. The Fighting Eagles play at Katy Pope John XXIII on Friday, Oct. 5. Kickoff for each game is set for 7 p.m.
