Three Spring Branch ISD students chosen to serve on mayor's youth council

Three Spring Branch Independent School District students have been chosen to serve on the mayor's youth council for this school year.

Houston City Council member Ellen Cohen administered the oath of office to 44 area high school students at an inauguration ceremony Oct. 30 in the city council chambers, according to a press release.

The Spring Branch ISD students who will serve on the council are Memorial High School junior Ben Meredith, at-large member; Memorial sophomore Sarah Thomas, a senior aide; and Stratford High School freshman Reilly Lawrence, at-large senior aide.

The students were selected by a panel of advisers from a pool of more than 300 applicants. Selections were based on personal interviews and written responses to application questions.

"We're proud to foster government leadership among young Houstonians," said Mayor Annise Parker in the release. "The youth council offers its members an exciting opportunity to not only learn how city government works, but also to develop as leaders as they carry out their role representing Houston's young citizens."

Student members will serve on the council through April 2013. During this time, they will participate in public service activities. The youth council has been in operation for 14 years.

The Spring Branch Independent School District is located at 1050 N. Dairy Ashford Road, Houston.
