Memorial athletes in action: Women's basketball
These women's basketball players, both with Memorial high school ties, have scheduled action this week:
Fallon Ellis, Iowa State University
Position: Guard and Forward
High school: Westbury Christian High School
This week: Sunday, Dec. 9, vs. Fairfield University
About Ellis: Missouri City native Ellis is a sophomore forward and guard for Iowa State University. She is a 2010 graduate of Westbury Christian High School in Houston, where she was four-time letter winner for the Wildcats. Ellis earned all-state honors from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and TAPPS, was a 2011 McDonald's All-American game nominee, and also earned all-state honors as a junior. Ellis is the daughter of Sonya Watkins Ellis.
Rachel Cumbo, University of South Alabama
Position: Guard
High school: Westside High School
This week: Saturday, Dec. 8, vs. Sam Houston State University
About Cumbo: Cumbo is a redshirt freshman guard for University of South Alabama. She is a 2011 graduate of Westside High School in Houston where she was a four-year letter winner under head coach Troy Gillespie. Cumbo was named first-team all-district after averaging 14.7 points per game with five rebounds 2.5 assists and 3.1 steals as a senior. She helped WHS to a second-place finish in its conference with a 26-11 record and was selected to participate in the Greater Houston Area All-Star Game in the spring of her senior year where she recorded nine points. The sports marketing major is from Houston and is the daughter of Eddie and Monique Cumbo.
