Building fire reported in Houston, Jan. 14

The Houston Fire Department reported a building fire that occurred in the 3400 block of Walnut Bend Lane in Houston at 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14.

The Houston Fire Department was the primary department on the scene.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.

According to a press release from the department, "Houston Fire Department arson investigators have determined that discarded cigarettes caused an early morning fire to a southwest Houston apartment building and damaged eight units, four of which suffered heavy damage. Although there were no injuries resulting from this fire, according to the National Fire Protection Association, smoking materials (i.e., cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc.) are the leading cause of fire deaths in the United States."
